Tehran, Iran, May 22

By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said only Yemeni sides should partake in the country’s peace talks.

Zarif made the remarks during a meeting with the UN Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania, ISNA reported May 22.

The Iranian foreign minister stated that if needed, Iran and other countries can play a role in Yemen’s peace process.

He deemed it necessary that a ceasefire be established before any talks could be held on the future of Yemen.

Ahmed for his part thanked Iran for its efforts aimed at bringing Yemen to peace.

Stressing the need for a ceasefire, he also urged Yemeni-Yemeni talks. All the Yemeni groups must be there in the talks and no group should be left out, the UN envoy underlined.

Iran has been a critic especially of the ongoing airstrikes on Yemen, calling for peace and political talks.

A Saudi-led coalition has been pounding Yemen since the Houthi group gained control of the country.

Saudi Arabia twice obstructed Iran's airborne humanitarian aid to the war-hit Yemeni people. But this week Iran dispatched a relief ship to Yemen and says has more food and medical help to send.
