Azercosmos holds workshop on use of Azersky satellite imagery for defence and security purposes

REPORT.AZ/ A workshop dedicated to application of the satellite imagery acquired from Azersky, high resolution optical Earth observation satellite, into defence and security was held in the Main Satellite Ground Control Station in partnership with Airbus Defense & Space, Report informs. 
The main objective of the workshop was to demonstrate capabilities of Azersky, discuss existing application areas, and reveal new potential application areas in the format of mutual discussion.
Specialists of Azercosmos and Airbus Defense and Space, manufacturer of the satellite, delivered presentations on technical spesifications of the satellite, practical use satellite imagery for military purposes, and supply, control and monitoring of military operations with geo-intelligence data. The aim of the workshop was to educate potential beneficiaries. The workshop organized in interactive way was attended by the representatives of Azerbaijan’s power structures, such as the Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Emergency Situations, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Defence, and the State Border Service. Similar seminar to be held by the end of this year will be dedicated to the application of satellite imagery into exploration and monitoring of natural resources.
Azersky was successfully launched into orbit on June 30, 2014 and was handed over to Azercosmos on December 2, 2014. The satellite is expected to operate for 12 years. The satellite has a broad range of applications such as defense, security, emergency response, exploration of natural resources, maritime surveillance, environmental protection, urban planning, cartography, agriculture, tourism, and so on.
Azercosmos is the premier satellite operator in the Caucasus. Azerspace-1, the telecommunication satellite operated by Azercosmos, provides highly-reliable broadband and broadcast solutions to its customers in Europe, Africa, Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. The satellite, to operate in orbit for at least 15 years, was launched in February 2013 and is equipped with 36 transponders: 24 in C-band and 12 in Ku-band at 46° East longitude. In December 2014, Azercosmos took over the rights to operate and commercialize Azersky, high resolution (1.5m imagery products) optical Earth observation satellite, and entered into the commercial business of Earth observation services, including Geo-Information services. Strategic development plans of the company include enhancing the coverage area and spectrum of services by launching the second telecommunications satellite Azerspace-2 at 45 degrees East orbital location and a very high resolution optical Earth observation satellite.
