By Fatih Karimov – Trend: The Islamic Republic of Iran is aware of its regional responsibilities and is interested in constructive collaboration with the world, said Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi.
Economic cooperation is the best way to guarantee regional security and expand relations among nations, Iran’s IRNA news agency quoted Akhoundi as saying.
He made the remarks at the end of the 14th Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Committee Meeting, which was held in Tehran on July 27.
While commenting on the meeting Akhoundi said that building Sarakhs-Sarakhs and Sarakhs-Tajan highways, and Ashgabat-Turkmenabat freeway, boosting exports, facilitating border trade, and transiting up to 10 million tons of cargo from Kazakhstan via railroad were among the cases which were discussed.
A rail corridor, which passes through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan and connects Incheh Boroun to the Persian Gulf, should be taken advantage of to boost regional ties, he noted.
Akhoundi and Turkmen Foreign Affairs Minister Rashid Meredov signed a couple of MoUs at the end of the 14th Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Committee Meeting to boost cooperation in economic, cultural, and educational areas.
In May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced Iran’s readiness to speed up the implementation of road building, technical and engineering, as well as energy projects in Turkmenistan .
Turkmenistan was the 7th leading importer of Iranian non-oil goods in the previous Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2015, according to the Iran Customs Administration.
Iran exported $973.65 million of non-oil goods to Turkmenistan and imported $113.72 million of non-oil goods from the country.
