By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

For the first time, the Islamic Republic of Iran has appointed a member of country’s Sunni religious minority as ambassador, Iranian media outlets reported.

Saleh Adibi who belongs to Kurdish ethnic and Sunni religious minority was appointed as Iran ’s ambassador to Vietnam and Cambodia.

In a news conference in Iran ’s western Kurdistan Province, Adibi said before he was considered as ambassador to Australia, however due to the necessity to deal with Sunni Muslim population residing in Vietnam and Cambodia, he was appointed there.

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani’s 2013 campaign promise was to change security-oriented stance towards Iranian ethnic groups and remove all kind of discrimination towards them.

During his visit to the Kurdistan Province in late July, Rouhani promised to launch a Kurdish branch of official IRNA News Agency and promote the Kurdish language and literature in higher education centers.
