Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 3

By Umid Niayesh – Trend:

Azerbaijan is a suitable route for transferring Iran’s gas to EU, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said.

He made the remarks during a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Oktay Asadov, the press office of Iran’s embassy to Baku told Trend Sept. 3.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Fourth World Conference of Parliament Speakers in New York.

Larijani underlined that cooperation between Tehran and Baku can be developed further in the fields of oil and gas.

Iran holds 33.8 trillion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves— or 18.2 percent of the world’s total proven reserves.

The country has been pursuing multiple projects for years to pipe natural gas to Europe. The most serious project was Nabucco which was pursued by an international consortium led by Austria’s OMV. Iran had been originally designated in Nabucco as a key supplier for future exports to Europe.

However, the country was sidelined from the scheme in 2008 due to a series of complications that emerged - the most important of which were international sanctions that banned foreign investments in Iran’s energy sector.

Early in April Rovnag Abdullayev, the president of Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company said that Iran is interested in purchasing a stake in the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).

Meanwhile the Islamic Republic says that Tehran is still studying the issue of participating in TAP and TANAP gas pipelines.
