NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has urged Russia to respect the alliance’s airspace and avoid escalating tension, RIA Novosti reported.

“I urge Russia to take the necessary steps to align its efforts with those of the international community in the fight against ISIL,” he said.

NATO secretary general added that Russia’s actions are not contributing to the security and stability of the region.

The Foreign Ministry of Turkey (one of the members of NATO) said Oct. 5 that the planes of Russian air forces, involved in the military operation in Syria, violated Turkey’s airspace on Oct. 3.

The aircraft of Turkish air forces carried out warning sorties following the violation of the country’s airspace.

After this Russian planes left the Turkish airspace.

Following the incident, Russian ambassador to Turkey was summoned to the country’s Foreign Ministry to clarify the situation.

Commenting on the situation, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that in case if Turkey’s airspace is repeatedly violated by Russia, the issue can be reviewed by NATO.

He also said Russia informed that the incident with military aircraft took place by mistake.
