By Elena Kosolapova – Trend:

Iran will not join the Eurasian Economic Union of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia because this union is not attractive, research director at Berlin Centre for Caspian Region Studies Behrooz Abdolvand believes.

“The Union is not attractive enough for a membership. The economy of Iran is very dynamic and needs more than a membership in a Union,” Abdolvand told Trend.

He noted that a membership in the Eurasian Economic Union is not an advantage for the Iranian economy, but on the contrary would be devastating for Iran, especially because the sanctions against Russia will grow in the future.

Meanwhile Abdolvand said that a generous cooperation between Iran and the Union is possible.

Earlier, the co-chairman of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission, Iran’s Minister of Communications Mahmoud Vaezi said that Iran is interested in joining the Eurasian Economic Union and it can happen in 2-3 years.

Moreover Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Tehran this week said that the Eurasian Economic Union will start considering the possibilities of creating a free trade zone with Iran.

The Eurasian Economic Union is an international integration union created on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space.
