Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 30

By Anakhanum Khidayatova – Trend:

At the moment, the bilateral relations between Russia and Turkey are tensed and emotions have a strong influence, Matthias Dornfeldt, head of the European Institute for Caucasus and Caspian Studies, told Trend Nov. 30.

Dornfeldt, however, believes that the parties will find a solution for the current situation, “because they have a lot of important common interests and challenges as well as problems to solve.”

Relations between Russia and Turkey deteriorated after the downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber by Turkish Air Force Nov. 24.

After the incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin decreed to impose special economic actions against Turkey, banning or limiting import of certain goods from Turkey in line with a list defined by Russian government.

The expert also said Azerbaijan can play a role as a mediator in the current Russian-Turkish dispute.

“This [Azerbaijan’s role] could be in the field of confidence building measures,” noted Dornfeldt.

Earlier, deputy head of Azerbaijani presidential administration, chief of the administration’s foreign relations department, Novruz Mammadov said on Twitter that Azerbaijan doesn’t want to see a confrontation between its friends, referring to Turkey and Russia.

“Azerbaijan stands ready to make its contribution to reducing tension,” he said in another tweet.
