Women in Iran use the social networking sites to date online more than men do, said Razia Azarnia, chairwoman of the Iranian Students Polling Agency, citing the agency’s survey conducted in autumn this year.

One of the reasons for such an activity of women on social networks is their loneliness, and a desire to get rid of boredom and join groups online, the local news agency ISNA has quoted Azarnia as saying.

“The men taking part in the poll said they use the social networks for advertising and marketing,” she said.

Azarnia stressed that 86.1 percent of the poll participants said they use social networks for entertainment, leisure and just for interest.

“Some 46.1 percent of respondents named the lack of restrictions as the reason for activity online, 33.9 percent – possibility to get easily and emotionally familiar with the opposite sex, 52.3 percent – inability to speak about the existing problems publicly,” said Azarnia.

She added that 92.5 percent of respondents said they use social networks daily, while some 7.5 percent – several times a week.

“Some 31.4 percent of respondents use social networks from half an hour to an hour, some 23.9 percent - less than half an hour, 18.2 percent – for an hour or two,” said the agency’s head.

Azernia noted that 24 percent of those who took part in the poll use social networks to watch “funny stories”, some 22.6 percent – for video chatting and 19.8 percent – for viewing videos and photos.

She also provided the statistics on the messenger apps by those surveyed.

“Some 26.9 percent use the Telegram Messenger, 19,3 percent – Line, 15,6 percent – other programs for communication, including Viber,” noted Azeriya.

Because of some mentality and religious reasons, women in Iran face more restrictions in communicating in real life, rather than on social networks.

In recent years, the use of social networking sites on mobile phones has become more popular in Iran.

Earlier, Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Mahmoud Vaezi told reporters that 13 to 14 million people in the country use Telegram, and this app is the most popular and favorite throughout the Islamic Republic.
