Baku, December 7, AZERTAC
Latvia’s Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma announced her resignation Monday, citing a need for “new ideas, a new contribution and new energy” to run the Baltic nation, according to The Wall Street Journal.
President Raimond Vejonis said he would consult all political parties represented in the country’s Parliament, with a view of asking another political leader to form a new government.
Under Ms. Straujuma—who had served since January 2014 as the small country’s first female prime minister—Latvia’s three-way coalition government focused on strengthening national defense in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The government has been faced with domestic problems, however, as disgruntled Latvians demanded higher pay, as well as better health care coverage and education.
