Systemic corruption is threatening the future of the Islamic Republic, Ahmad Tavakkoli, an Iranian MP said.
Not military aggression, neither military coup nor even velvet revolution can impose any impact on the Islamic Republic, but corruption is a certain threat, Tavakkoli said, Iran’s ILNA news agency reported Dec. 9.
He further said that one of the corruption types is systemic corruption which referred to a situation that the governmental bodies that are responsible to fight corruption are corrupt themselves.
Today in the Islamic Republic some high-ranking officials took the office without merit due to their certain relations, Tavakkoli said, adding that this leads to corruption.
The MP also said that the systematic corruption doesn’t mean that the entire system is corrupt, as there are recent efforts by the judiciary to confront corruption, Tavakkoli added.
It is not the first time that Tavvakoli warns about the corruption in the Islamic Republic. Earlier in 2014 in similar statements Tavakoli said that Iran has reached a state of systematic corruption.
“The term systemic corruption is used to describe a state where institutions that are tasked to battle corruption in the judiciary branch, the security forces and parliament are themselves corrupt to an extent.”
He also referred to a group that gives bribes to parliament MPs to influence government institutions.
Iran ranked 136 among 174 countries in terms of corruption perceptions in 2014, according to Transparency International's latest annual report. The country's rank started falling during the administration of ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran had the worst spot in 2009, ranked 168.
