The fire in the building of a neuropsychiatric care home in the village of Alferovka in the Russian Voronezh region has been extinguished. Nine people were reported dead and the fate of 12 others remain unknown, according to source in the region's emergencies ministry department, Sputnik reported.

Twenty-two persons were hospitalized in the aftermath of the fire in the neuropsychiatric hospital in the Voronezh region, all of them reported to be in critical condition, Igor Banin, the head physician of Voronezh’s regional clinical center, said as reported by RIA Novosti. Banin added that 55 of 77 located in the burnt hospital people were found.

The fire in the care home consisting of two bulks that are home for some 140 patients occurred on Saturday evening, according to sources in the local emergency services.
Investigators are looking at a malfunction in the electrical system as a possible cause.

“One of the main versions [of the fire] is a problem with electrical systems. The other possible problem is careless handling of fire,” a source from emergency services told RIA Novosti.

When the fire started in one of the bulks, 74 patients were inside, including 30 invalids. Reportedly 53 of them were evacuated.

Investigators have launched a probe into the cause, committee of inquiry spokesperson Elena Manukovskaya told RIA Novosti.
