Tehran ready to help resolve dispute between Ankara, Moscow

Chairman of Caucasus Muslims Office, Russian Patriarch to meet in Moscow (21 November 2016 18:46)

Date: 13 December 2015 12:12

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 13

By Farhad Daneshvar – Trend:

Tehran has expressed readiness to help resolving an existing dispute between Ankara and Russia over Turkey's downing of a Russian jet.

Iran’s First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri expressed his concerns over the dispute and described the tension as worrisome, Fars news agency reported Dec. 13.

The remarks came at a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a meeting in Turkmenistan's capital city of Ashgabat on December 12.

In turn, Erdogan said he is against the escalation of tensions in the region and called for dialog to clear misunderstandings.

He added despite the differences over Syria, Tehran and Ankara should join efforts in fight against terrorism.

Tensions between Russia and Turkey escalated following downing a Russian SU-24 bomber by Turkish Air Force along its border with Syria Nov. 24.

Erogan further urged Jahangiri and his government to tone down Iranian media’s coverage of Turkey and stop criticism against Turkish president’s relatives.

In response, Jahangiri said the Iranian administration does not impose any restrictions on media and added the administration is itself criticized by media in Iran.

Some Iranian outlets have carried reports claiming links between several members of Erdogan’s family and the Islamic State terrorist group (IS/ISIS/ISIL).

Jahangiri added that Iranian officials have never made any comment against the Turkish government. However, several Turkish officials have expressed “incorrect statements” against Iran.
