Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree Dec. 14 appointing Aziz Aliyev the rector of the Baku branch of the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.
Aziz Aliyev was born on Jan. 16, 1975 in Baku. In 1992, he graduated from the Baku school #134. Between 1992 and 1999, he studied at the New York University. From 1999 to 2002, he did residency at the School of Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh.
During the residency, he passed a rotation on maxillofacial surgery, different surgery areas, and the surgery of head and neck tumors.
In 2003, his scientific work, defended in the US, was approved by the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of Azerbaijan as a PhD dissertation, conferring him with the degree of candidate of medical sciences.
He worked as an associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Azerbaijan Medical University from September 2006 to December 2011.
Aliyev successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on "Hormones and molecular biomarkers in cancer and precancerous processes of the oral mucosa," and received the degree of Doctor of Medical Science in March of 2008.
Aliyev served as a surgical oncologist in the department of head and neck tumors at Barmherzigen Schwestern clinic in Linz, Austria in 2011 – 2013.
He has been the vice-rector on medical affairs of Azerbaijan Medical University since 2013.
Aliyev has also worked as a surgical oncologist in the department of head and neck tumors at National Center of Oncology of Azerbaijan since 2013. Aziz Aliyev is married and has two children.
