Seismic strengthening work has been launched on the Atomic Bomb Dome, a part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the western Japan city, according to Kyodo News. The seismic retrofitting of the building, designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, is expected to be completed in late March, 2016. The work aims to reinforce te dome to be able to withstand earthquakes of a seismic intensity level of lower 6 on Japan's 7-point scale, while maintaining its exterior, which was damaged by the atomic bomb. Steel materials will be applied from inside on three spots of top exterior walls that are especially weak.
