Turkey: Russia's attitude 'unacceptable'

Date: 19 December 2015 03:07

Turkey's officials convened for a National Security Meeting (MGK) on Friday and discussed several issues including terrorism, the Syrian crisis, namely the Turkmen situation and Russia, Anadolu reported.

The meeting was chaired by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the presidential complex in Ankara and lasted for 5 hours 45 minutes.

According to an official statement issued by the presidency's press office, Russia's attitude against Turkey was considered "unacceptable".

Following Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian military jet over the Turkey-Syria border which violated Turkish airspace last month, Russia imposed a range of unilateral sanctions against Turkey, including a ban on food imports.

During the meeting, the attendees were informed about Russian activities in Syria and their consequences, namely an increased influx of refugees.

"Turkey will not remain insensitive against the issues cognate and relative communities outside of Turkish borders and the moderate opposition," read the statement, referring to the Turkmen community in the Bayirbucak region of Syria’s northwestern Latakia province.

Thousands of Turkmens fled their homes following airstrikes from the regime of Bashar al-Assad with Russian support. Around 2,000 of them recently sought shelter in Turkey.

The council also reiterated the resolve to fight PKK terrorists "until terror is terminated".

The PKK -- also designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the EU -- renewed its armed campaign against the Turkish state this summer.

In addition, the council voiced support alongside the Iraqi people against terror groups such as Daesh and others which it said threatened "Iraq's territorial unity and sovereignty".

Among the other subjects were ongoing peace talks in Cyprus island, the revival of Turkey's membership process into EU and the processes aimes at maintaining stability in war-torn Libya and Yemen.
