The Omani-Iranian Joint Military Friendship Committee's 12th meeting began in Tehran on Dec. 19.
Naval forces of Iran and Oman are scheduled to hold a joint drill in the Sea of Oman on Dec. 23 once the meeting is concluded, Iranian Fars news agency reported on Dec. 19.
During the joint meeting, the two sides will discuss a number of topics listed on the agenda that would contribute to promoting the level of strategic relations and strengthening the existing cooperation ties in the military field.
The Iranian side is headed by deputy chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Rear Admiral Saleh Esfahani while it is chaired from the Omani side by senior Omani Army Commander Brigadier General Hamd bin Rashid bin Saeed al-Balushi.
Al-Balushi is heading a 12-member Omani military delegation on the four-day visit to Iran.
Iran and Oman have had vast cooperation in the military field and the two countries have already held several joint naval drills.
Earlier in Sep. 2013 Oman's minister responsible for defense matters, Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidi and Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan signed a defense cooperation memorandum. Cooperation on fighting against drug and human trafficking and boosting mutual educational and cultural ties between the two countries` armed forces are among the articles of the memorandum.
Oman and Iran, which share control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, maintain friendly relations.
