The 4th regional meeting of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) has kicked off in Iranian capital city of Tehran.

The two-day meeting will discuss strengthening the capacity of transport in the south and southwest of Asia, as well as Central Asia with the participation of 15 regional countries, IRNA news agency reported Dec 20.

The lack of proper transport in the region has caused increase in the trade costs, the secretary of the summit, Teymur Bashir Gonbadi said.

Therefore, it is necessary to establish ties between the regional states to decrease the costs, he added.

Gonbadi noted that after discussions on expanding the transportation, the summit will issue a statement on Dec.21.

Representatives from Azerbaijan, Nepal, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan will attend the summit, according to Gonbadi.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.
