By Khalid Kazimov – Trend:

At a meeting with President of the French Senate Gerard Larcher in Tehran Dec. 20, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for expansion of bilateral ties with France.

President Rouhani also called for serious fight against terrorism and said that terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS/ ISIS/ISIL) militant group threaten the international security, Fars news agency reported.

He said certain countries give support for the terrorist groups providing them with arms and equipment and it is not difficult to identify those countries that back terrorism.

He called for unity in fight against terrorism and said the world should not allow certain countries use the terrorists for their own interests.

He said the political reform in Syria should be carried out through democratic elections and by Syrian people.

In turn, Gerard Larcher said that there are proper chances for cooperation between Iran and France and expressed hope that the expansion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Paris will be discussed during President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to France in future.

Following Paris deadly attacks in November, President Rouhani postponed his planned visit to Italy and France which was supposed to be his first Europe trip as Iranian president since he assumed office in 2013. France hopes to reschedule President Rouhani’s postponed visit.
