By Elena Kosolapova – Trend:

Azerbaijan is the priority source of gas supply for Georgia, Dimitry Kumsishvili, Georgian economy and sustainable development minister, exclusively told Trend Dec. 23.

Earlier, it was reported that negotiations are underway between Russia’s Gazprom and Georgia over increasing gas supplies.

In addition, Georgia’s Minister of Energy Kakha Kaladze spoke earlier about the possibility of beginning gas procurement from Iran in connection with the lifting of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Azerbaijan is the main supplier of gas to Georgia. Meanwhile, Russian gas is being delivered to Georgia only as a payment in exchange for gas transit to Armenia, for which Georgia gets 10 percent of the total deliveries.

Gazprom delivered 300 million cubic meters of gas to Georgia in 2014.

Kumsishvili said the negotiations with the Russian side discuss technical issues of the transit of Russian gas through Georgia.

“No talks are being held on direct or any other supplies of Russian gas,” said the minister.

He added that today there are no talks about the gas supply from Iran.

Kumsishvili also noted that if there is a possibility in the future, Georgia will diversify gas supply sources, adding that however this isn’t being discussed now.

Ilya Eloshvili, Georgian deputy minister of energy, told Trend Dec. 23 that Georgia is considering all options in economic matters, but while making decisions it tends not to harm relations with strategic partners – Azerbaijan being one of them.
