Next meeting of the Milli Majlis Joint Working Group on Human Rights took place.
The government officials and civil society representatives, who are members of Working Group attended the meeting.
Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the International Relations and Inter-Parliamentary Ties Standing Committee of Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament), co-chairman of the Working Group Samad Seyidov on behalf of Group wished the head of state Ilham Aliyev happy birthday. He noted that the Group created at the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan in which representatives of all state and non-governmental organizations take part for the past period carried out effective activity, closely cooperated with the international organizations, including the Council of Europe. "However after the last meeting, the Secretary General of PACE Thorbjorn Jagland reconsidered the question of participation in Group of his special representative Alexander Gessel and withdrew him. Participation in the Working Group of the representative of the PACE Secretary General wasn't significant. Now, T. Jagland wants to return the representative to Azerbaijan. The Working Group carries out activity not only for the international organizations. The group was created to discuss problems in Azerbaijan and present to the government the ways of their solution”, - he stated.
Addressing the international organizations, the Chairman of Committee said that the Group which is carrying out independent activity will continue its work. Protection of human rights, ensuring rule of law, development of democracy are the priorities of democratic development of the Azerbaijani state. It is impossible to exert pressure upon the states, using human rights, he emphasized.
Speaking at the meeting, MP Azay Guliyev, Chingiz Ganizade and others noted that the Group is a special tool for further development of internal dialogue in Azerbaijan and that "why the Secretary General of PACE withdrew the representative in the Working Group isn't clear. We are ready to cooperate with all international organizations”.
