Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma said the country will confirm a new government before the end of January.
"The candidate for the post of the Prime minister may be slated next week, and another 2-3 weeks will be required to form a government. I urged the ministers of the cabinet to be in full operational readiness during one month," said Straujuma.
Early in December President of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis announced that he will nominate the candidate for the post of Prime minister himself.
"I gave the opportunity to the parties to negotiate and to find a stable and effective coalition model. Political parties did not avail themselves of this opportunity," Vejonis said on December 30.
"I am convinced that the political parties have a lot of professional people who are capable of taking responsibility. Therefore, using all the rights conferred by the Constitution, I am taking the initiative of nominating a Prime Minister-designate," he explained.
The parties have proven incapable of scratching together a coalition government, despite weeks of negotiations following the resignation of Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma on December 7.
