China has surpassed Germany to have the largest number of country code top-level domain websites with 16.36 million sites, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).
The CNNIC said all central and provincial government websites use the top-level .cn country domain for China.
Statistics show that 90 percent of the country's universities in Project 211, 80 percent of telecommunication companies, 70 percent of leading media outlets and 70 percent of banks also use the .cn domain.
The Chinese domain has also become more popular among foreign companies. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Citibank are among those using it.
In the past, Germany's .de domain had the largest number of registered websites.
