By Khalid Kazimov – Trend:

Iranian Ministry of Interior has qualified 90 percent of those who registered to run as candidates for the upcoming election of parliament to be held in late February.

According to Fars news agency, only 6.55 percent of the remaining 10 percent of applicants were rejected, and the rest withdrew their applications.

Reportedly, 12,050 people put forward their applications, of which 790 were rejected, 10,901 qualified and 266 withdrew their applications.

However, the outcome of vetting regarding 31 applicants was not announced.

The figure of approvals is a considerable record as it is the first time that 90 percent of applicants have been approved to run for a parliamentary election since the foundation of the Islamic Republic in 1979.

Although 5.63 percent of the applicants were disqualified in 2000 for the parliamentary election, only 78.07 percent were approved which is lower than the number of qualified applicants for the current round of election.

In 2000, either the rest of applicants withdrew their applications or the vetting outcome was not announced about them.

Earlier in mid-December, Iran started the nominee registration process for the upcoming elections for parliament and the Assembly of Experts.

Iranians are getting ready to elect both law makers for parliament and clerics for the Assembly of Experts through ballot boxes on February 26.
