Gas output in Azerbaijan affected by offshore rig accident

The accident on the platform #10 of Azerbaijan’s Gunashli oil field in the Caspian Sea had a major impact on the level of gas production in the country, read an article by energy minister, Natig Aliyev, published Jan. 15 by the official press.

A fire broke out on the offshore platform #10, Dec. 4, as a strong storm damaged an underwater high-pressure gas pipeline. As many as 33 people were rescued in an ensuing large-scale operation. The bodies of 11 killed were retrieved, while 19 oil workers are still listed as missing.

The minister’s article said that the fire that still continues on the platform will affect production volumes in 2016.

According to forecasts, gas production by Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR will amount to 6.3 billion cubic meters in 2016 compared to 6.9 billion cubic meters produced in 2015, read the article.

In 2014, SOCAR produced 7.22 billion cubic meters of gas.
