The Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) will create a new alternative for energy supply to Europe, said Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul.
Erdogan added that Turkey, as a country transiting energy resources, is helping to strengthen Europe’s energy security.
The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.
The TANAP project envisages gas transportation from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field to Europe via Turkey.
The initial capacity of TANAP is expected to reach 16 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Around six billion cubic meters of the total volume of gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of the Shah Deniz field, will be delivered to Turkey and 10 billion cubic meters to Europe per year. In future the pipeline may be expanded up to 31 billion cubic meters a year.
Turkmenistan is one of the key players in the gas market in the Caspian Sea region and Central Asia. Turkey expresses interest in re-export of Turkmen gas to Europe and supports transportation of Turkmen gas via the Southern Gas Corridor. The most optimal option is to lay a 300-kilometer gas pipeline through the Caspian Sea to the coast of Azerbaijan which has the appropriate infrastructure to transport gas to Turkey and further to Europe.
TANAP pipeline is planned to be commissioned in 2018.
