Swedish prosecutors are expecting to deal with more people suspected of crimes abroad in the near future, as coalition forces move in on the city of Mosul, held by the so-called Islamic State, according to Radio Sweden.

Swedish Radio reported recently on how local authorities are expecting to have to deal with people returning from fighting abroad.

Marie Lind Thompsen at the international prosecutor's office in Stockholm deals with cases including war crimes and breaches of human rights committed outside Sweden.

"For quite a while we have had more people coming here, and are expecting even more, considering what is happening in Iraq, but also in Syria," she tells Radio Sweden.

She says that an important source of tip-offs about suspected war criminals comes from the general public. The prosecutors then need to gather enough evidence to prove that someone has committed a crime.

This is not always possible.

"For example, people who come from conflict areas, there are many who have not committed any crimes, so it is not possible to say all who come from a conflict area have committed a crime. One must have proof," Lind Thompsen says.
