France's former interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve became the country's new prime minister on Tuesday, a day after Manuel Valls announced he would resign to run for the presidency in 2017, FRANCE 24 reports.
President François Hollande announced Cazeneuve would replace Valls as prime minister.
"The President of the Republic has appointed Bernard Cazeneuve as prime minister and asked him to form the new government," a statement from the president’s office said.
Cazeuneuve, a close Hollande ally, was named prime minister after Valls resigned from office in order to focus on his bid to become the left-wing nominee in the country’s upcoming 2017 presidential elections.
