Kazakhstan has launched Kuryk ferry complex on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. With a capacity of 4 million tons of cargo a year, the new ferry complex will focus on handling grain, petroleum products, fertilizers, chemicals and other goods in neighboring Caspian littoral states.
The large-scale ferry from the port of Kuryk and Borzhakty - Ersai railway line will provide multimodal transportation of general and liquid cargo, which will significantly increase the transit traffic, increase the export potential in the western direction through the Caspian Sea.
According to Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company, Kuryk ferry complex, located on the territory of 40 hectares, will play an important role in the transportation of goods through the Trans-Caspian international transport route. Both existing and new ferries will be used in the direction of Azerbaijan.
One of the first ships sent from the Kuryk port, was Shahdag ship of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company.
The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route runs through China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and then through Turkey and Ukraine to Europe. The first test container train from China arrived at the Baku International Sea Trade Port on August 3, 2015.
The agreement to create the Trans-Caspian International Transportation Consortium was signed in April in Baku by the railway authorities of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan. New competitive tariffs were introduced for the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route on June 1, 2016.
