The police in Turkey’s southern Sanliurfa province detained 10 people near the border with Syria, Milliyet newspaper reported on Mar.30.
Reportedly, the detainees intended to join the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). All the detainees were Turkish citizens.
The guide who was supposed to help the mentioned people illegally cross the Turkish-Syrian border is also among the detainees. This guide appeared to be a driver working in the Suruc municipality of Sanliurfa province.
A criminal case was launched into the case.
It should be noted that the conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for over 25 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives. The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the UN and the European Union.
The process of democratic settlement to the Kurdish problem in Turkey kicked off in 2009, following which a part of the PKK militants left the country’s territory and moved to the neighboring Iraq.
