Baku – APA. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative UMP party and its allies have swept to victory in the second and final round of French local elections, with the ruling Socialists losing half the local councils it held before the vote, APA reports quoting Reuters.
The far-right National Front made only limited gains as the Gaullist UMP and its allies took over two-thirds of the 102 "departments" or local councils, exit polls showed, up from 41 now, in a boost for the former president, whose recent comeback is challenged within his own party.
Mr Hollande's Socialist Party won 34 departments.
