By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Iraqi President Fuad Masum hailed Iran’s role in helping Iraq fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group, saying that Iran was the first country which sent military aid to Iraq.

The Iraqi president made the remarks before leaving Baghdad to Tehran to hold talks with Iranian officials about political, economic, and cultural issues, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported on May 10.

He termed relations between the two countries as strategic, saying that economic, cultural, and military ties should be expanded as much as possible.

Ministers of environment, trade, and tourism will accompany Fuad Masum in the trip to Iran.

“Considering the importance of preventing from dust storms and desertification, the two sides should reinforce cooperation with other regional countries,” he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iraqi president said a nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group would contribute to the establishment of peace and stability in the region.

He also warned against persistence of Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against Yemen, saying it would inflict heavy damage on the Yemeni people and pose numerous challenges to the region as well.
