An individual suspected of human trafficking resulting in the death of 12 people off the southern coast of Bodrum, Turkey, last week has been detained in the southern Mugla province on Sunday, Anadolu agency reported.

The Turkish suspect was taken into custody in Bodrum district in an operation conducted by police in the evening Sunday, according to security sources.

The suspect accused of “migrant smuggling and causing death voluntarily” will be sent to court on Monday.

On Wednesday, 12 people, including eight children, drowned after their boat sank en route to the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Their bodies had washed up on the shores of Turkey’s tourist destination Bodrum.
