Effective cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia is an example for the whole region, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said.
He made the remarks during the meeting with Georgian deputy prime minister, foreign minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili as part of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, according to Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
During the meeting, the sides noted that the large-scale transport and energy projects that are being implemented by Azerbaijan and Georgia are aimed at strengthening the regional cooperation and development of the two countries.
The foreign ministers also expressed confidence that the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project will allow to increase the cargo transportation and in general, to develop the bilateral trade and economic relations.
During the meeting, Mammadyarov invited his Georgian counterpart to visit Azerbaijan and noted that such visits create favorable conditions for determining the future areas of bilateral cooperation.
Kvirikashvili for his part accepted the invitation of his Azerbaijani counterpart with great pleasure and said that Georgia is always ready to support Azerbaijan in the issues which are of special importance for it.
Furthermore, Azerbaijan’s foreign minister said that the Armenian side intensively violates the ceasefire on the contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani armies.
He also briefed his Georgian counterpart about Armenia’s provocative acts on the contact line and along the border, as well as this country’s destructive position in the negotiations on resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Mammadyarov noted that this conflict is the main threat to peace and security in the world.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
