Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 3

Azerbaijan’s expectation from German chairmanship at OSCE is the achievement of a progress in the Karabakh conflict’s settlement, according to Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

The need to step up Germany’s activity as a future OSCE chairing country, as well as the cooperation priorities in this regard were discussed by Minister Mammadyarov and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Belgrade, Serbia, during the OSCE Ministerial Council Dec. 3, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has told Trend.

Azerbaijani FM said Germany can make a significant contribution to the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The ministers also discussed the development of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Germany.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
