Tehran, Iran, December 8

By Mehdi Sepahvand –- Trend:

Iranian international law expert Yousof Molaee has said that the recent US claim about Iran’s violation of UN resolutions by conducting missile tests is not effective.

Two US officials said on December 7 that Iran tested a new medium-range ballistic missile last month in a breach of two U.N. Security Council resolutions.

A country like the the US can take everything to the UN Security Council, but what is important is the reasons with which it backs its claim to make it convincing enough to get votes for a resolution, Molaee told Trend December 8.

But there are countries such as Russia that can veto the move and everything will be over, he noted.

Fox News earlier on December 7 claimed Western intelligence sources as saying the test was held near Chabahar, a port city near Iran's border with Pakistan.

All ballistic missile tests by Iran are banned under a 2010 Security Council resolution that remains valid until a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers is implemented.

Under that deal, reached on July 14, most sanctions on Iran will be lifted in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. According to a July 20 resolution endorsing that deal, Iran is still "called upon" to refrain from work on ballistic missiles designed to deliver nuclear weapons for up to eight years.

But Tehran says it has not, nor will conduct military-related nuclear activities.

Last week, IAEA helped closed the possible military dimensions (PMD) of Iran’s nuclear activities by presenting a report that generally testified to the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities. Such report was needed for the group 5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) to implement their nuclear deal with Iran.
