Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 17

By Elena Kosolapova – Trend:

Contribution of the “Islamic anti-terrorism coalition” led by Saudi Arabia in fighting the “Islamic state” will equal nothing, president of the independent Institute for Middle Eastern Studies in Moscow Yevgeny Satanovsky told Trend Dec.17.

Previously, Saudi Arabia formed the “Islamic anti-terrorism coalition” of 34 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Egypt, Qatar, Yemen, Turkey and others. At the same time, Iran, which is one of the most influential countries in the region and which actively fights the IS in the coalition which includes Russia, Syria and Iraq, has not entered the coalition. Most of the countries, which joined the new coalition are also included in other military coalition against the IS with the Western countries.

“The “Islamic anti-terrorism coalition” is created not in order to fight terrorism, which is supported by Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia itself,’ Satanovsky said.

He went on to add that there are no “common efforts” in the fight against terrorism, and never will be - one builds its own system of relations.

“So Riyadh builds its system without the West,” said the expert.

Satanovsky said that Iran didn’t join the coalition because of the relations with Saudi Arabia, which are far from friendly. For example, Armenia will not enter the coalition which will be created by Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijan and Turkey will not enter a coalition which will be created by Armenia for the same reason Iran didn’t join the “Islamic anti-terrorism coalition,” he said.
