Tehran, Iran, Dec. 19

By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

There was strong unity among various countries at the second World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China to take the Internet out of the monopoly of the United States, said Iranian ICT Minister Mahmoud Vaezi.

“The US is seeking to keep the monopoly for itself, but hearing the talks made during the three-day conference, it seems that the monopoly is about to break,” IRNA agency quoted him as saying Dec. 19.

“All countries want respect for the nations’ sovereignty over cyberspace and access to safe infrastructure and a pure atmosphere free of any threat,” noted the minister.

He added that one of the prevalent problems about the Internet today is its misuse by some persons and groups.

“The issue is so outstanding that even some Western countries attending the conference demanded decisive actions against it,” he said.

Representatives from dozens of countries attended the Wuzhen conference.

Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also attended the conference.

During the last year’s conference, authorities urged global Internet executives to sign a pact vowing to “respect the Internet sovereignty of all the countries.”

Some executives resisted and the effort failed.
