Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 24

By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

Some regional states are pursuing wrong policies, some other seeking to revive their imperial past, Iran’s parliament speaker, Ali Larijani said, Iran’s Fars news agency reported Dec. 24.

The age of empires is over, Larijani said, adding that is an illusion and will impose high costs to the region.

The Iranian official did not name any certain country in his remarks, however some Iranian officials in numerous occasions have accused Turkey of attempting to resurrect the Ottoman Empire.

The Islamic Republic is in a serious disagreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey over Syrian crisis. Iran is a close ally of the Syrian government and has always shown its support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad, while Riyadh and Ankara support opposition groups trying to topple him.

Larijani further referred to the ideologies followed by some terrorist groups in the region such as the IS (ISIS, aka ISIL or Daesh), saying it has formed a wrong perception of Islam in the world.

He also accused the Western countries of using the extremist groups to spread Islamophobia.

“In the current situation, certain Western countries are seeking to spoil the image of Islam and create Islamophobia through the instrumental use of terrorists,” Larijani said, adding terrorist groups definitely play a destructive role in the Muslim world.

He said that terrorists’ thoughts have nothing to do with Islam or Islamic schools of thought.
