Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 11

By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

The policy of Saudi Arabia is based on imposing its unilateral policies to other states and nations, said Hossein Jaber Ansari, the spokesman with the Iranian foreign ministry.

“These days, Riyadh has been continuing its efforts as part of its unilateral policies in the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab League to find a partner and say that it is not alone,” Jaber Ansari said during his weekly press conference in the foreign ministry in Tehran Jan. 11, Iranian state-run IRINN TV reported.

The Iranian official further claimed that Saudi Arabia’s actions were not followed by other Arab states.

“The released statements by the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council are mere slogans to show the position, but not accompanying Riyadh,” he added.

Arab foreign ministers, with the exception of that of Lebanon, earlier condemned what they called Iran’s meddling in Arab affairs in a Jan. 10 statement.

The ministers accused Iran of breaking international agreements by intentionally failing to protect Saudi diplomatic missions.

The crisis erupted between Riyadh and Tehran after execution of a prominent Shia cleric, Nimr al-Nimr by Saudis on Jan. 2. Afterwards, angry Iranian protesters attacked Saudi embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad. Right after the attacks on its diplomatic missions, the Saudi Arabia said it severed ties with the Islamic Republic.

Bahrain, Sudan, Djibouti, and the UAE also rallied to Saudi Arabia's side, breaking off or downgrading relations with Iran.

Senior Iranian officials including President Hassan Rouhani have condemned the protestors’ act as being disgraceful for the Islamic Republic. Rouhani also required related bodies to take legal actions against the protestors.

Meanwhile, Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said Jan. 11 that the Iranian judiciary continues to identify and arrest those involved in attacks on Saudi embassy.
