The United States should change the way it manages its energy resources, US President Barack Obama said during the State of the Union address.

"Now we’ve got to accelerate the transition away from dirty energy,” Obama said on Tuesday.

“That’s why I’m going to push to change the way we manage our oil and coal resources, so that they better reflect the costs they impose on taxpayers and our planet.”

Obama introduced on August 3 the Clean Power Plan, which targets curbing US power plant carbon pollution by 32 percent in the next 15 years. The plan seeks to heavily regulate coal and other fossil fuel plants, and seeks to shift the focus to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.

In May, Obama said climate change is an "immediate risk" to US national security and should be addressed as soon as possible.

The White House has since announced a number of policies that aim to reduce carbon pollution and promote increased use of alternative energy sources.

Obama delivered his final State of the Union speech on Tuesday evening at the US Capitol, addressing the remaining top priorities for his last year in office.
