Moscow, January 14, AZERTAC
Member of the Federation Council Committee representing Buryatia, Arnold Tulokhonov, met with veterans of the Baikal-Amur Mainline and representatives of the Azerbaijani national groups, according to Baikal Daily.
They discussed the initiative to erect a monument to Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev. The initiative commemorates Heydar Aliyev`s supervision of the construction of Baikal-Amur Mainline.
Heydar Aliyev was appointed as the first deputy prime minister of the USSR Council of Ministers in 1983. He visited the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) for the first time in July, 1984. Heydar Aliyev was the only member of the Soviet Union’s Communist Party Central Committee, who visited the Baikal-Amur Mainline.
Veterans of Baikal-Amur Mainline construction remember that the whole track line was split between the builders, representing various Soviet republics. Azerbaijani workers constructed dozens of objects at Buryat section of the BAM track, adjacent to Agnoy station. A railroad station then was named after Heydar Aliyev and a memorial plaque was installed here. The 35th anniversary of the arrival of first train to Agnoy station will be marked this year and an official delegation of Azerbaijan is expected to attend the unveiling of the monument to Heydar Aliyev.
