Monza will return to the European Formula 3 calendar in 2017, it has been confirmed by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, according to motorsport.

The legendary Italian track appears as the second venue on a 10-round schedule that was released during the governing body's latest meeting in Vienna on Wednesday, albeit without a confirmed date.

It last hosted an F3 round in 2015, a meeting that was marred by crashes - including a major airborne incident for Williams F1 signing Lance Stroll.

The championship will also return to the UK in 2017, with the FIA WEC-supporting Silverstone opener dropping off the calendar in 2016 - although it has not been confirmed which track the series will visit.

Of this year's schedule, only the Imola and Paul Ricard rounds have been dropped.

Hockenheim will once again host the season finale on 15 October, although the preceding round at the Red Bull Ring also does not yet have a date fixed.
