By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

At least 21 Iranian MPs have signed a letter asking president Hassan Rouhani to dismiss Ali Younesi, who serves as Rouhani’s special aide for the affairs of ethnic groups and religious minorities.

In the letters which will be submitted to the parliament’s presiding board on March 15, the MPs have warned the president over Younesi’s recent “unconsidered” statement which is “threatening the Islamic Republic’s national security,” Iran’s Fars news agency reported March 14.

Last week Younesi said that “Iraq is not only within the area of Iran’s civilization, it is also Iran’s identity, culture and capital and this is true now as in the past,” while addressing a forum on Iran’s ethnic identity.

“The geography of Iran and Iraq cannot be divided,” said Younesi, speaking at a Tehran forum titled “Iran: nationality, history and culture.”

He also claimed that people now living in neighboring countries are also Iranian because their countries were separated from the “great Iran’s” east and west.

“Protecting our national security and historical identity would not be possible unless defining our influence area in the region,” Younesi said.

Iran does not eye beyond its borders but a natural unification exists and a great Iran, Iranian culture and its civilization is dominant in the region, he argued.

Iranian MPs called Younesi’s statements in line with Iranophobia and Islamophobia which is promoted by the Islamic Republic’s enemies.
