Vilnius, January 12, AZERTAC
Christmas Book campaign, initiated by President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, helped collect 50,000 new books for public and school libraries across Lithuania. The campaign, which is being organized in Lithuania for the fifth time, is aimed at encouraging children and youth to donate new and gently used books to libraries. The project is organized in partnership with the Azerbaijani Embassy in Lithuania.
The first initiative titled Volunteers of Book Christmas has brought together several thousands of book lovers and helped organize the reading of books in children's homes and nursing homes as well as families and centers of socialization.
President Grybauskaite said: “Christmas Book campaign has become a universal movement, which unites book buddies all over the country. Importantly, the book helps reduce social isolation, encourages communication… Thousands of new books will delight readers at most remote libraries from Didžiasalis to Skuodas. I sincerely thank all those who participated so actively in this action."
During five years of Christmas Book campaign more than 172,000 books have been donated to Lithuanian libraries.
