This year's Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine has been awarded to Yoshinori Osumi of Japan for his research on autophagy, according to Kyodo news agency.
Osumi, 71, an honorary professor at Japan's Tokyo Institute of Technology, discovered mechanisms behind autophagy, the process by which old cellular components are broken down and recycled.
"[Osumi's] discoveries opened the path to understanding the fundamental importance of autophagy in many physiological processes, such as in the adaptation to starvation or response to infection," the Swedish medical institute said in a statement.
