Turkmen president to attend opening ceremony of Baku 2015 first European Games

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov paid a working visit to Baku. At the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, President Berdimuhamedov will attend the opening ceremony of the Baku 2015 first European Games as the honorary guest, the government said June 12.

Several bilateral meetings are planned to be held as part of President Berdimuhamedov’s visit.

The cooperation issues in a number of key areas, including sport, will be discussed.

Being a goodwill guide of friendly nations, today sport opens new possibilities and prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation, the statement said.

“Playing an increasingly important role in bringing together different cultures and regions, it directly serves to strengthening of peace and constructive dialogue for the sake of common happy future,” said the message.

The decision of the Olympic Council of Asia to hold the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat in 2017 became the obvious recognition of the high international authority of independent neutral Turkmenistan, its merits and achievements in the field of sports.

Especially for the competition, which will involve thousands of athletes from the countries of Asia and Oceania, a unique, the region's largest multi-purpose sports complex is being constructed in the white-marble Turkmen capital.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
