The European Olympic Committees (EOC) said June 19 that the Albanian athlete Rexhildo Zeneli was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation under EOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Baku 2015 European Games, and was suspended from taking part in the Games.
Zeneli, a boxer from Albania, provided a urine sample on June 13 in association with his participation in the Baku 2015, as part of the EOC’s out-of-competition testing program, said the Baku 2015 official website.
“The sample was found to contain a furosemide, which is a prohibited substance under section S5 (diuretics and masking agents) of the 2015 WADA List of Prohibited Substances and Prohibited Methods, and is therefore also prohibited under the EOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Baku 2015 European Games,” read the message.
Zeneli had not competed in the European Games for the time being.
“Further anti-doping procedures will be conducted by the competent international organizations,” said the message.
“The Baku 2015 European Games Anti-Doping Program has comprehensive, intelligent and robust anti-doping procedures that apply to all athletes competing at the European Games,” read the Baku 2015 message.
“The athletes are tested for substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency and, upon finding that an Anti-Doping Rule Violation has been committed, sanctions are imposed in accordance with the requirements of the EOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Baku 2015 European Games.”
The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.
More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
