By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

No request was submitted by Iranian airlines for buying Russian passenger planes, Mohammad Khodakarami, deputy head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) said.

Khodakarami made the remarks while reacting to some reports about Iran’s interest for buying Russian passenger planes, Fars news agency reported Jan. 2.

No aircraft can be imported by Iranian airlines without permission of the CAO, Khodakarami said, adding that currently there is no request for Russian planes.

Earlier Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Moscow might deliver a big batch of Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger aircraft to Iran by 2020.

The planes can be in part localized by Iranian producers if Tehran makes a political decision to purchase ready-made aircraft, Rogozin said.

Iran does not seem to be interested in purchasing Russian planes, since according to local reports, the performances of Russian aircraft wasn't satisfactory during the earlier sanctions period in Iran.

However, Russian aircraft manufacturers remain interested in Iran’s market despite negative viewpoints in Iran.

Khodakarami further touched upon the current situation of Iran’s civil airplane fleet, saying one-third of Iran’s passenger planes are still grounded.

The number of Iran's active aircrafts stands at 250 with average age of 22 years, he added.
