Baku, Azerbaijan, June 19

By Ilkin Izzet – Trend:

Azerbaijani boxer Tayfur Aliyev considers that fan support, which gave him extra strength, helped him to win.

“In the third round I heard the audience screaming my name, and that inspired me even more,” Aliyev (weight category up to 56 kg), who defeated Romanian athlete Nicolae Andreiana in the 1/8 finals of the European Games, told Trend June 19.

He said that he won the gold medal at the Great Silk Way Elite Boxing Tournament, which was held in Baku in April, and is going to repeat his success now at the European Games. “My goal is to reach the first place, then successfully perform at the world championship and get a license for the Olympic Games 2016,” said the athlete.

The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
